The Industry Heats Up; Get Ready

By Jonathan Davis, president, SEMI North America

Semiconductor industry capital spending growth forecasts for 2010 range from 60 to 90 percent or more. Finally, a break for the semiconductor equipment and materials markets! According to the SEMI Consensus Forecast, the North American equipment market is expected to top $4.4 billion in 2010. Intel, IBM and GLOBALFOUNDRIES anticipate significant spending increases in advanced chip geometries and 3D IC technologies, while emerging markets in MEMS, LEDs and flexible electronics are expecting breakthrough record years.

The semiconductor industry rebound and emerging market opportunities are fueling interest in SEMICON West 2010, which returns to San Francisco on July 13-15. This year, new programs cover leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing, emerging market opportunities in LEDs, flexible electronics, MEMS, and productivity opportunities in established fabs.

Last year, over 17,000 visitors attended SEMICON West – including buyers and specifiers from virtually every IDM and foundry in the world and every major fabless semiconductor company in the U.S. Highlights of this year’s SEMICON West include:

  • TechXPOTs: The latest news on next-generation lithography, 450 mm, 3D IC, advanced packaging and other major industry initiatives will be discussed at the TechXPOT stages. This year, two smaller stages called TechSites will explore the latest productivity and technology solutions in a variety of areas.
  • ASMC 2010: The 21st Annual IEEE/SEMI Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Conference (ASMC 2010) will be co-located with SEMICON West for the first time and features critical development and technological breakthroughs. Because of the unique balance of participation by device makers, equipment and materials suppliers, and academics, ASMC leads to understandings and relationships which can benefit participating companies in a variety of ways, including accelerating innovation, promoting successes, and gaining a more thorough understanding of standards and benchmarks.
  • Keynote Speeches: IBM Fellow Dr. Bernard Meyerson, VP, IBM Systems and Technology Group; and Intel fellow Dr. Paolo Gargini, chairman, ITRS, and director, Technology Strategy for Intel.

SEMICON West 2010 will also be enhanced by its third year of partnership with Intersolar, the leading solar energy technology event.

Free visitor registration for SEMICON West 2010 is open through June 4, 2010; after that, a $100 onsite registration charge applies. To register or learn about exhibiting opportunities at SEMICON West 2010, please visit www.semiconwest.org.
