From the SEMI® Europe President
A Rollercoaster Year After the worst year in the history of the industry, we experienced an incredible rebound. According to the year-end edition of the SEMI Capital Equipment Forecast, in 2009 European semiconductor equipment sales were US$ 970 million; in 2010, the forecast is $2.33 billion. That's more than double, with $2.91 billion forecast for 2011, up another 25 percent.
I would like to thank our loyal members for their support throughout 2010, a year of opportunities both for our members and the SEMI organization. We ended the year with 70 new members, reaching 250 European members. This means that Europe's share of SEMI membership has increased from 10 to about 14 percent of the global membership.
We thank our customers and committee members and all the stakeholders who supported SEMI Europe through this year and look forward to engaging with you again in 2011.
Best wishes for the coming year, and please mark your calendar with the events for SEMI Europe 2011.

Fab Capacity Back in the Black: Up 8% Fab Spending to Increase by 18% in 2011; Uncertain Outlook for New Fab Construction By Christian Gregor Dieseldorff, SEMI IR&S
The latest edition of the SEMI World Fab Forecast predicts 8% annual growth in installed fab capacity for 2010, at least another 8% for 2011 and at least 9% for 2012. This projection is based on input of announced capacity plans and other analysis regarding needed fabs investments.
Semiconductor Investments in Korea By Daniel Tracy, SEMI IR&S
Investments in Korea have increased steadily over the past decade, especially given the strength of Samsung and Hynix in the memory market. Since 2002, installed 300 mm capacity in Korea has increased sharply, and currently 9% growth in 300 mm capacity is forecasted for 2011 and possibly another 10% or more growth in 2012.

SEMI HB-LED Standards Committee Formed; Call for Participants Manufacturing Standards Will Help LED Industry Reduce Costs and Accelerate Market Penetration
The overall market for high-brightness (HB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) will grow 68 percent this year to reach $9.1 billion, with projections of doubling in size to $18.4 billion by 2014, according to industry analysts.
MEMS Market Can Expect Steady Growth, Structural Change By Paula Doe, SEMI Adjacent Markets
High-volume demand for MEMS means steady double-digit growth -- and likely also some structural changes in the market. "MEMS is no longer a niche market," argued Susumu Kaminaga, president of Sumitomo Precision Products Co. Ltd., at the recent MIG MEMS Executive Congress in Scottsdale, Arizona.
China FPD Market Expands to Meet Local Demand, Global Markets China Government Approves 2 Advanced Korean LCD Fabs
Foreign and domestic Flat Panel Display (FPD) investments are expanding to meet booming demand for TVs and other products in China, as well as to meet international demand.
Global PV Competition Creates Increased International Trade Disputes By Bettina Weiss, executive director, SEMI PV Group
The solar PV market needs a global trade system without restrictive barriers between countries. Buyers should be able to purchase from suppliers around the world without tariffs or other restrictions that favor local manufacturers. Suppliers should be able to sell without unreasonable tariffs and fees.
Hot Topics -- 3D IC, MEMS, and Secondary Equipment -- at SEMICON Taiwan 2010
SEMICON Taiwan 2010 highlighted emerging markets like LEDs, MEMS, and 3D ICs and Advanced Packaging/Testing, with some emphasis on the Secondary Market for capital equipment too.
