Productivity Transfer Propels Further Growth of China Packaging Industry By Bin Chou, SEMI Shanghai China There has been strong growth of China's semiconductor assembly industry over the past several years as foreign semiconductor companies increase their manufacturing presence in China. This trend will continue as the intense pressure to reduce costs drives advanced packaging production to China.
PV Group Advances Solar Policy Best Practices at Congressional Briefing, International Webcast In support of the PV Group's policy position on feed-in tariffs (FIT), the PV Group recently took part in a renewable energy policy briefing on Capitol Hill and organized an online webcast on FIT Best Practices with leading policy experts around the world.
Korea Targets the Recovery and Beyond Optimism about the short and long term prospects for the semiconductor industry was heard throughout SEMICON Korea, held on February 3-5 in Seoul. "Rapid demand growth in developing countries and new and emerging electronics applications will be the primary growth drivers for the industry," said Dr. Joo-Tai Moon, senior VP of Samsung Electronics, at the Day One keynote speech.

2010 ISS-US Blue Chip Panel: A "Perfect Storm" By Scott Landstrom, SCI Consulting On January 12 at the annual SEMI Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS), the Executive Panel session focused on "The Structural Evolution of the Semiconductor Equipment Industry." Panelists were from: Applied Materials, KLA-Tencor, Lam Research, Mattson Technology, Novellus Systems, and Teradyne.
SEMI Seeks RoHS Exclusion for Semiconductor and PV Manufacturing Equipment By Heinz Kundert, president, SEMI Europe Europe's RoHS regulation restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. While semiconductor and PV manufacturing equipment are currently excluded from the scope of RoHS under the LSIT exclusion, a new proposal would include them in RoHS.
SEMI Export Control Proposals Approved Globally The export control requirements for etch equipment and cluster tools will be reduced as a result of SEMI's public policy work. Each year SEMI works closely with member companies to push for improvements to the export control list maintained by the multilateral Wassenaar Arrangement as part of their annual list review.
