From the SEMI® Europe President
The Big Question
Semiconductor sales in the first half of the year have shown a clear and general sense of recovery following the classic industry recovery profile: first the re-stocking (following the excessive Q4-2008 de-stocking) which drove the first half of 2009 recovery, then demand taking over, the main driver for the second half of 2009... Clusters: Connecting the Semiconductor Value Chain High-level panelists addressed the theme of clusters from several angles: Politics, R&D, Education and Industry at the 25-26 June event in Grenoble, France: "Clusters, A Chance for the European Semiconductor Ecosystem."
2010 Total Fab Spending Growth Could Reach 61%; Abrupt Reduction in Installed Capacity Through 2010 By Christian Gregor Dieseldorff, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics The World Fab Forecast now shows the growth rate for total fab spending could be about 61% in 2010 (vs. 90% reported in mid-May). 2009 spending will be so low that any adjustment or change in 2010 capital spending plans can drastically alter forecasted growth rates.
PV Market Update What Can We Learn from the Slowdown? By Ross Young, Young Market Research From Q1'07 to Q3'08, times were good for solar cell manufacturers. Revenues were rising rapidly, margins were healthy with profit margins in double-digits and prices were trending upwards.

Improving Efficiency and Productivity with a Data-Driven Tool Architecture By Larry Bourget, Axcelis Technologies and Dave Faulkner, Cimetrix Since the introduction of the 300mm wafer size, data requirements for semiconductor manufacturing equipment have increased dramatically. Equipment suppliers today are required to support more than a dozen SEMI standards related to factory automation and a host of commonly used substrate-handling components.
Positive Response to ENIAC Call 2; EU Funding Testimonials More than 570 participants from 23 European countries submitted 27 Project Outlines in response to the 2009 ENIAC Joint Undertaking Call for Proposals, competing for over 200M€ of R&D funding.
Secondary Equipment Market Readies for New Era While buyers and sellers of used semiconductor equipment wait out the prolonged industry downturn, most players agree that the market for used equipment and services will be transformed in the coming months and years.

The Value of Lobbying in the EU SEMI Europe, now has an office in Brussels, where it nurtures permanent contacts with EU policymakers: the European Commission, Permanent Representation offices of various national States, and other industry associations.
New SEMI Standard for MEMS: Hermeticity Evaluation SEMI has announced the latest in the series of MEMS standards, MS8 Guide to Evaluating Hermeticity of MEMS Packages, available to users on-line immediately.
Semi-Directory Now Available on SEMI.org A comprehensive directory of semiconductor companies is now available on the semi.org website. The directory will help decision makers make more informed purchases.
Bright Prospects Found at Intersolar Munich 2009 With approximately 58,600 visitors from over 150 nations, 22 conferences held, and 860 registered press journalists, Intersolar, the world's largest trade show for solar technology, met its objectives.
The Power of Industry Partnerships By Aaron Zude, SEMI EHS
One of the great things about working at SEMI is the unique opportunity to partner with other EHS professionals and organizations in responding to the EHS challenges facing high tech industries.
SEMI PV Group Commends Taiwan Taiwan's goal is to be the world's third-largest producer of solar cells by 2015. SEMI recently commended Taiwan for its renewable energy plan.
