From the SEMI® Europe President
Made in Europe
"Made in Europe" isn't just a slogan. It's a belief, a conviction, that Europe will remain competitive in the microelectronics industry. For that to happen, the focus must be on innovation.
Innovation cannot happen without R&D, and the microelectronics industry is highly R&D intensive. That's one of the reasons that SEMICON Europa is important. At SEMICON Europa 2008, exhibitors will display their manufacturing technologies for semiconductor devices and photovoltaic cells from 7-9 October 2008 at the Messe Stuttgart. Forty-nine percent of SEMICON Europa visitors attend to discover new products and technologies... (more)

Infinite Possibilities Abound at SEMICON Europa
According to the SEMI mid-year consensus forecast, an estimated US$ 2.53 billion will be spent in Europe on semiconductor manufacturing equipment this year and another US$ 2.62 billion next year (4% growth). The materials market is also growing in Europe, reaching nearly US$ 4 billion.
Domestic Equipment Suppliers in China Seek Both Semiconductor and Solar Industry Growth By Lily Feng and Dan Tracy, SEMI Industry Research & Statistics
About 80 domestic companies in China are devoted to semiconductor equipment research and manufacturing. But what's extraordinary is the quiet collaboration between the fabs and the equipment manufacturers on process technologies as the pursuit of growth intensifies.
Wafer-Size Transition to 450 mm? 5 Misconceptions It seems that everyone in the industry "knows" that bigger wafers mean better productivity and more profits, and everyone "knows" that wafer size changes happen every 10 years, and everyone "knows" that bigger wafers are at least twice as productive as small wafers.
Semiconductor Materials: Record Volumes, Record Revenues By Lara Chamness and Dan Tracy, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
Semiconductor materials form the base of the $1.5 trillion electronics industry. The explosion of consumer-oriented applications is driving growth in the semiconductor industry and is creating many opportunities for semiconductor materials suppliers.
A Critical Step to Reduce PV Manufacturing Cost: International Standards
By Bettina Weiss, SEMI Does the world need PV Standards? Yes, because no standards exist and the industry needs them urgently. About 20% of SEMI members are active in the photovoltaic sector, and that's why SEMI formed the PVGroup— and why SEMI is working to develop standards for PV.
View the TechXPOTs Slides: Learn about Emerging Tech, Device Scaling and TAP At SEMICON® West 2008, the TechXPOTs focused on Emerging Technologies, Device Scaling, and Test, Assembly, and Packaging. Each one delved deep into the issues, resulting in animated discussion and collaboration. See what it was all about by viewing the presentation slides.
SEMI Board Welcomes new Chairman, Appointees During the recently concluded SEMICON West 2008, held in San Francisco, CA in mid-July, SEMI announced that Bob Akins, chairman and CEO at Cymer, is the next chairman of the association's International Board of Directors.
Bucking the Trends, SEMICON West Gets Bigger and Brighter SEMICON West 2008 visitor attendance increased 19% over 2007 to more than 17,000, while overall registered attendance grew 8% to more than 45,000. Interest in PV soared, with Intersolar co-located at the show and more than a third of exhibitors featuring technology for the PV market.
Flexible and Printed Electronics By Kevin Cammack, FlexTech Alliance The microchip has transformed the lives of everyone on this planet in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago. Today, a new technological revolution is emerging that could have a similar impact on our lives.

Intel's EHS Focus: to Reduce Absolute Environmental Footprint Brian Krzanich, VP of Intel, describes the company's desire to reduce its overall environmental footprint on an absolute scale even as the company continues to grow. While early 1980's EHS efforts focused on a "keep us out of jail" mindset, EHS has evolved and is now recognized as a way to improve the company's bottom line.
SEMICON Taiwan Teams Up to Create a More Powerful Venue SEMICON Taiwan (September 9-11) is the largest microelectronics event in the region, featuring more than 700 exhibiting companies and attracting more than 45,000 visitors. The exhibition showcases technologies used in the design and manufacturing of semiconductors, photovoltaics, nanoelectronics, and related technologies.
From A to Z: Wide Range of Courses Available at SEMI Headquarters Whether you are technical or non-technical, your career growth depends on your knowledge and skills— and on your management's perception of your knowledge. SEMI provides top training for industry technical and non-technical staff and sales and marketing staff.
